I’m nervous about starting therapy. Is that normal?
It’s common to feel nervous when starting therapy. You don't know what to expect or how it works. It feels odd to speak to a stranger about your problems. The fear of opening up feels overwhelming. However, if you don't try, you'll never know. I recommend meeting for six sessions to help you decide whether therapy is for you.
Therapy is a space where you can be yourself, even if you are nervous. I’m committed to finding a way to support you so that you are as comfortable as possible.
I hope you schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation today.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
Take your time and read through my website. If you feel that I am a good fit for you based on what you read, schedule a free phone consultation using the appointment button on the contact page.
During a free phone consultation, you can ask me questions about my approach. You’ll also be able to share about yourself so we can determine if I might be of service to you.
It’s a good idea to use the first few sessions to make sure we are a good fit. During the first few sessions, you’ll get an idea of how counseling works, and you will figure out if you are comfortable working with me. My approach is not going to work for everyone. What’s most important to me is that you find someone who you feel is the right fit for you. We can explore that together.
What if I don't want to talk about something?
It’s natural if you aren’t ready to discuss the painful or difficult things you have been through. During our sessions, you will never have to discuss things you are uncomfortable with. You will decide the topic of discussion at sessions. Gradually, and at your own pace, you can discuss the things you are ready to share.
If you are nervous about opening up, we can talk about that too. It is important that you share what you are going through so we can explore that together.
I’m scared that if I open up, you will judge me.
Many clients felt scared of being judged. It is normal and natural for clients to feel fear of judgment, and it is also important to understand that the challenges you are having are part of being human.
You’re a good person. Nothing you can say will cause me to judge you.
I know nobody’s perfect. We all struggle. We are humans having human experiences in a rapidly changing world.
Whatever you’re going through, I promise to listen with focus, compassion, and nonjudgment.
Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?
You may be concerned that your friends, family, or work colleagues will learn what you discussed during therapy. You should know that (with a few exceptions) unless you are suicidal, plan to harm someone, or divulge information that a child or elderly person is being neglected or abused, what you say in session stays in session.
Your privacy and trust are of utmost importance. Rest assured that you can talk about anything without fear of that information being divulged.
If you have specific questions about how confidentiality works, we can discuss them during your free phone consultation or anytime during our work together.
What can I expect to get out of therapy?
Depending on the reasons you are seeking out therapy, what you can expect to get out of therapy differs. Generally, my clients are seeking clarity around a certain issue, want to break the cycle of bad habits, or need advice and counsel about a current life situation. Whatever is going on for you, therapy should make it easier by providing clarity, relief, confidence, and changes in thinking, behavior, or perspective.

How long will therapy take?
You might be asking how long therapy will take because it’s hard to fit into your busy schedule.
If this is true for you, new clients often start seeing positive effects after the first six sessions. It can feel like a relief to have someone listen to you, understand your experiences, and normalize what you are going through.
The total duration of therapy varies from client to client. Some of my clients find that 6 – 8 sessions are enough to resolve immediate challenges. While other clients feel more supported by longer-term therapy.
We will work together to find the length of time that works for you.
There is no way to determine how many sessions you will need. Each person is unique.
What can I expect during the first session?
Overall, you can think of the first session as a structured assessment that helps me get to know you and the challenges you have had that brought you into treatment. I’ll invite you to share more about yourself, and we will talk about what’s worked or not worked in you previous treatment.
Some questions that I like to ask during a first session include:
- What brought you to therapy?
- Have you gone to therapy before? How did that go?
- What are your top three goals for treatment?
Feel free to ask me questions, as you may be curious about my experience or how future sessions work.
The most important part of a first session is to notice how you feel during and after the session. If you feel welcome, secure, and at peace with me, we will discuss if you’d like to schedule another appointment.
How can I get started?
Let’s set up a free phone consultation. You can share what’s going on and we can determine how I could best be of service to you.
You can request a new appointment here. Or, feel free to contact online or call me at 940-268-5290.
Will I have to take prescribed medication?
That depends on how you are feeling. The decision to take or not take prescribed medication is always yours to make. If you are severely anxious or depressed, I will recommend that you see your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist to be assessed for medication management. Oftentimes the best outcomes occur when clients are participating in therapy and receiving medication management. There are times when a client’s primary doctor, psychiatrist, and therapist work to coordinate a client’s care.
Are you a Christian Counselor?
I offer evidence-based interventions, which means that the interventions I am trained in and use have been backed by research and have been found to be effective. I would be happy to explore spirituality and religion if that is important to you, but if you aren’t interested in discussing religion and spirituality that is okay too.
